EXCLUSIVE: Finally, NASS set to Amend NAHCON Establishment Act

The National Assembly is finally set to Amend the Establishment Act of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

To this end, the senate committee on foreign affairs has fixed a date for a public hearing on the amendments

HAJJ REPORTERS gathered that the committee, which is headed by Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa had on April 11th sent a letter of invitation to the Chairman Forum of States Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards Executives and also sent a copy to the Chairman/CEO of NAHCON.

It reads “The senate at its sitting on Wednesday 27th April 2022 read the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria Act (Amendment) Bill, 2022 (SB.982) the second time and referred same to the committee for further legislation.

Further details in the letter, which was sighted by HAJJ REPORTERS indicated that the public hearing which is slated for 27th of April 2023 will be held at Conference room 231, Senate New Wing at National Assembly Complex by 2pm.

“The Bill seeks to “Amend the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria Act to restrict the activities of the commission to its regulatory and coordinating functions, as it relates to the conduct of operations of Hajj and Umrah in Nigeria, prohibits the use of funds accruing to Hajj Saving Schemes and provides for comprehensive licensing guidelines and related matters”

This is the first time that the Act is being amended since its passage in the year 2006
