The provincial administration of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) called on the public to well manage waste for an exchange of the Hajj pilgrimage cost (BPIH) through its program dubbed The Gade Clean and Gold.
NTB in tandem with state-owned pawnshop PT Pegadaian and a waste bank company PT Bintang Sejahtera run the program in a bid to reduce waste in the final landfill or TPA that has limited capacity.
Deputy Governor Sitti Rohmi Djalilah and Pegadaian Bali-Nusa Tenggara branch head Nuril Ismaliyah launched the program at the complex of Bintang Sejahtera waste bank in Mataram, Wednesday, Oct. 30.
Sitti Rohmi hoped the program could be applied not only in Mataram City but also in all regions of the province.
Through the program, people would be encouraged to manage waste properly as it would help them to perform hajj.
Each client is required to daily deposit five kilograms of trash in five months for an exchange of a 3.5-gram gold bar as an assurance of the hajj pilgrimage.
Nuril said that the program, established through her firm’s CSR, was a form of caring for the environment. In addition to Mataram City, she mentioned that Pegadaian aimed to construct more waste banks in Sumbawa Besar and Selong, East Lombok.
