THE Malaysian cabinet has agreed to  to reauthorise umrah travel activities for pilgrims from Malaysia starting February 8, 2022.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Art and Culture (Motac) the refined SOP for umrah travel will be brought to the Quartet Meeting for approval.

” Among the focuses given are:  ensure a complete congregation of vaccinations and mandate booster doses, each congregation is covered by insurance that provides health coverage including treatment, isolation and quarantine requirements for Covid-19 infection while in Saudi Arabia and while returning to Malaysia; and the umrah operator company is responsible for informing pilgrims on responsibilities, procedures, liabilities and instructions throughout the pilgrimage journey,” the ministry said in a statement yesterday.

The government on Jan 8, has previously decided to suspend temporarily Umrah travel in light of the Omicron infection rate among the pilgrims.

“Apart from the evaluation of the data by the Ministry of Health, the temporary suspension currently is intended to provide space for Government agencies and all parties involved to evaluate and improve the SOP,” Motac added.

According to minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, a total of eight engagement sessions have been held since December 2021 involving umrah operator companies such as the Association of Operating Companies

Malaysian Bumiputera Tourism (BUMITRA), Umrah Travel Agency Association and Haji (PAPUH), as well as the Malaysian Association of Tour & Travel Agents (MATTA). –
