“Muzdalifah” is the third sacred site, located between Mina and Arafat, where pilgrims stop for a while in their journey of faith to perform Hajj. Upon arrival, pilgrims pray the prayers of Maghrib and Isha’ together and shorten its rakats and collect pebbles to throw them at one of the three walls in Mina. They stay there until next day, which is the morning of Eid al-Adha, then proceed to Mina.

The origin of the name “Muzdalifah” has been a source of great debate between scholars, and there is no definite story. But it is theorized that the name is derived from the word “Zulf”, which means a part on the night, pointing to the fact that pilgrims have to spend the night in Muzdalifah.

Serving the two Holy Mosques and the holy sites is the core concern of the Saudi leadership’s in order to ease and facilitate their Hajj. This was particular to the site of Muzdalifah, which is undergoing many development projects, including the expansion of the Sacred Monument, and setting up sleeping areas for pilgrims on site. The sleeping areas are equipped with all required services, such as medical and sanitary facilities, clean water, roads, lighting, telecommunication access, nutrition, information and security centers, and many other services.
