MAKKAH — Located about 20 meters from the Kaaba in Makkah, the Zamzam well is considered as the world’s. The 5,000 years old well streamed from under the feet of Ismail, peace be upon him, and his mother Hajar, Prophet Ibrahim’s wife. The Zamzam well has pushed the boundary in continuing to stream until this day, even though studies have shown that wells only last for 70 years with streaming water.

The well pumps water with a maximum rate of 18.5 liters per second, and a minimum of 11 liters per second. It is 30 meters deep and still quenches the pilgrims’ thirst since Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) called people to perform Haj.

The story of the well started once Allah ordered Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) to leave his wife Hajar and her son Ismail in an ‘uncultivated valley’, another name for Makkah. After Ismail’s food and water ran out, his mother started running back and forth from Safa to Marwah searching for water. At that point Gabriel (peace be upon him) pumped the water from under the child’s feet. Hajar immediately drank the water and fed her son.

Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said: “May Allah bestow mercy on Ismail’s mother! Had she left the Zamzam flow without trying to control it, Zamzam would have been a stream flowing on the surface of the earth.”

Before the era of Prophet Muhammad’s grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, and many years after him, the flow of Zamzam water abated and later completely blocked. Abdul Muttalib received a vision to re-dig the well, and so he located the well and dug it for it to start pumping again and feed the pilgrims. This became the process carried out by Abdul Muttalib’s family and his son Abbas Bin Abdul Muttalib inherited this responsibility after him.
