Allah revealed Qur’an to the Prophet (PBUH) to guide human beings on a righteous path and call upon disbelievers to submit to Allah.  The Prophet (PBUH) used to lead Muslims in prayers. After that the companions of the Prophet led the prayers. Subsequently, numerous well known Islamic Scholars assumed the Imamate of Masjid Al-Haram.

 

Today in this article, we are going to discuss the 10 important things you must know about, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, the Imam of Masjid Al- Haram.

 

Sheikh Abdul Rahman Al Sudais is the General President for the Affairs of the two Holy Mosques, Commander-in-chief of the special forces of the security of the two Holy Mosques and leading Imam at Masjid Al-Haram.

 

He was born on 10 February, 1960 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His full name is Abdul Rahman Ibn Abdul Aziz Al Sudais. He belongs to Anza clan of the Najd area. He was an excellent student throughout his childhood. At the age of 12, he memorized the Holy Quran.

Sheikh Al Sudais studied at Al Muthana Bin Harith elementary school and graduated in 1979 with excellent grades. He went on to earn Bachelor degree in Shariah in 1983 from Riyadh University. He pursued Masters from Mohammad Bin Saud Islamic University in 1987. While working as an assistant professor, he did his PhD in 1995 from Umm Al Qura University.

 

He has been counted as one of the best Qari. He is quite famous for emotional recitation of the Quran in accordance with Tajweed. Earlier, his recitation was recorded and distributed through CDs, but now millions of Muslims listen to his recitation online.

 

Sheikh Al Sudais became Imam of the Masjid Al Haram in 1984 by a royal decree at the young age of 22 and conducted his first sermon at the Grand Mosque in Mecca in July 1984. He used to lead Muslims in daily prayers and since then he is actively leading Muslims in daily prayers as well as special prayers such as Friday prayer, Taraweeh and two Eid prayers.

 

Sheikh Al Sudais received the “Islamic Personality of the Year” award in 2005. He was awarded by the Dubai International Holy Qur’an’s Award (DIHQA) for his service in of the Qur’an and Islam. Upon receiving the award in Dubai, he said: “The message of Islam and Muslims is modesty, fairness, security, stability, sympathy, harmony and kindness.”

 

Sheikh is also credited as the leader of Inter-faith peace prayer. Sheikh Abdul Rahman led 10,000 people in prayer for inter-faith harmony organized in London in 2004. The event was attended by various dignitaries of different faiths.

 

Abdul Rahman Al Sudais is a Pro-Palestinian and always raised his voice through different platforms in favor of Palestinians. He has denounced the treatment of Palestinians by Israeli settlers and the state of Israel, and called for more & more aid to be sent to Palestinians.

 

Sheikh has been on a constant target by Jews and western media because of his strict comments on Jews and Israelis. He has been denied entry to the US and Canada on the basis of his comments on Jews and other Non-Muslims. Western media always tried to vilify him as a racist and hateful preacher.

 

Imam Al Sudais holds the rank of ministers in Saudi Arabia. He became a minister in 2012 following his appointment as General President of the affairs of two Holy Mosques. In 2017, Al Sudais supervised the documentary film ‘One Day in the Haram’, a film portraying the Haram Sharif in Makkah through the eyes of workers.
